Second Guiness World Record

The proudly Bidvest family in Johannesburg came out in full force on Sunday, August 14 when we
reclaimed our title for the largest charity walk which we narrowly conceded to a Canadian company,
Any Baby Can, earlier this year.

Last year we set the world record with an impressive 4 458 participants, smashing the 2009 record by 2 555 walkers. In April 2011, the Bidvest record was overtaken at the AT&T Centre in San Antonio, Texas when 5 441 people crossed the finish line. Just four months later we again set the benchmark with 8 040 employees crossing the finish line. This year’s 10km walk saw more than 24 000 Proudly Bidvest employees and their families starting the walk from Bidvest Wanderers Stadium, taking to the street – Corlett Drive, through Illovo and back to the stadium for the final count.

This walk was more than just about the Guinness World Record and bragging rights, but also about contributing to our communities and we exceeded
last year’s donation of R81 000 (which was donated to the Hospice Witwatersrand charity) by making a donation of R180 000 to the Reach
for a Dream Foundation.  “Last year’s event was so spectacular that
we decided to make this an annual event.

We’re an ambitious group of people that set out to rewrite the record books, raising money for charity as we enjoyed a sunny Sunday with our valued employees and their families,” smiled Brian Joffe, chief executive.

An excited Kebu Motuba from Audi Arcadia won the grand prize of a Ford Figo and there were also 18 prizes of R5 000 which all contributed to an extremely successful event. To complete a perfect morning in the sun, South African favourites, Mango Groove, took to the stage and in moments had the crowd ‘dancing some more’!
